The Lost Hero: A Roman change up?

I am reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. I loved the Percy Jackson series so I decided to give Rick Riordan's newest series a try. So far I have really enjoyed it. There is just enough truth about the Greek mythology to make it a fantasy and an educational book.  A little bit more of the fantasy though. The main characters are Jason, Piper, and Leo. Three demigods that are just arriving at Camp Half-Blood. They are immediately sent into action upon their arrival.

"A stunned Annabeth pointed at Piper's dagger, which was now oiled and gleaming, hanging at her side on a golden cord. Piper didn't want to draw it. She was afraid of what she might see. But her curiosity won out.She unsheathed Katoptris and stared at her reflection in the polished metal blade. Her hair was perfect: lush and long and chocolate brown, braided with gold ribbons down one side so it fell across her shoulder. She even wore makeup, better then Piper would know how to do herself-subtle touches that made her lips cherry red and brought all the different colors in her eyes."
I chose the passage above because Piper came of as a tomboy and a little grungy. But when she was claimed by one of her parents, who is a God, she changed into a raving beauty. It was unexpected so I sense quite a few surprises in the future. This passage also shows how the author gets into detail and really helps to create imagery.
